Nuggets from Wise Women Over 40

I wanted to share some nuggets from the “MORE Magazine Re-Invention Convention” I recently attended. MORE Magazine celebrates women over 40 and I must say walking into a room of women over-40 was heartening. The vibe was upbeat, warm and collegial. A lot of life experience was not only being presented but was seated in the chairs.

One of the highlights was the interview of Carly Fiorina. I especially enjoyed these nuggets:

  • If you don’t understand what a client, prospect, friend or relative is saying, the likelihood is that it’s their explanation, not your shortage of intelligence. She explained how to get a clearer understanding.
  • She shared her formula for life experience: perspective, common sense and good judgment. These are only gained through living, so are attributes less likely to show up in Gen X or Y…yet.
  • What it means to be a survivor and how to better your chances for surviving and thriving.

You can get more of details on my blog.

I also considered Darcey Howard’s presentation, as the Chief Style Officer of LifeStyled, to be a highlight. She talked about branding yourself with style. What I loved about Darcey was the clarity in her message.

People like Darcey inspire me. She reminds me what a great impression you can make and how you can stand out at any event. When you go through the process of figuring out who you are, you know what your message is, and you spend the time and resources to create that for the public to see–it shows. She stood out in my memory from that day in a positive and professional way. Read more about Darcey’s presentation and share with me people you’ve met recently that stood out from the crowd.

Choose Courses with the Right Outcomes

In my talk “21 Results-Driven Strategies for Growing Your Business”, #14 is Teach and Take Courses. I advocate getting out there, investing in yourself and keeping up with your industry and entrepreneurship. Make sure to choose the outcomes you’re looking for when it comes to signing-up for courses.

Personally, I stay far away from promises of instant success, build-a website-this-weekend or “Earn $10,000 a week in your spare time” offers.  Instead I look for programs that provide information I’m looking for, don’t cost an arm and a leg and are highly recommended by my peers. What classes are you taking? Are you continually investing in yourself–the Golden Goose? Please share these with me.
